I force cancer cells to evolve to try and work out how they become deadly.
Most cancers kill when they spread around the body (this is called metastasis). If we can work out how this occurs we can try and stop it.This would mean lots of cancers such as breast or skin cancer would no longer be deadly.
I put cancer cells under pressure and force them to adapt and change. I stain them different colours such as red and green so I can watch them move around. I’m trying to work out which pressures force them to move and why.
My Typical Day
I’m either in the lab doing an experiment or on my computer working out what it shows me!
I usually spend my morning in the lab doing my experiments and the afternoons sorting through the data.
In my spare time I read journals and articles about the exciting new discoveries in my field.
I also teach students helping them in practical classes and marking their work.
What I'd do with the money
Help young students interested in science gain experience
I’d help fund visits from schools and sixth forms to the labs I work in.
Hopefully students would get some practical experience which would not only look good on a CV but also let them see what it’s actually like to ‘be a biologist’.
Visits would also let people see what it’s like to go to university and hopefully encourage them to think about a science degree.
The money would specifically fund transport costs for visiting schools as well as practical costs so they could get dirty in the lab!
