Oxygen is a chemical element in the periodic table. It can occur bound to other elements and make different things – sand is made of silicon and oxygen bound together. However, you’ll probably come across oxygen most often as a gas. We need oxygen to make energy in our bodies as we get it into our bodies by breathing it in our lungs.

Oxygen is a chemical element. The atomic structure of an oxygen atom means that it likes to be paired up with another oxygen atom so is usually found as two oxygen atoms stuck together. This is called also called oxygen and is written as O2.

It is O2 which is in the air that we breathe.
